Brunswick Place

The site is located in the market town of Biggleswade on a corner plot at the junction of Rose Lane and Sun Street in a visually prominent location occupied by a detached five bedroom Victorian Villa set back in a corner of a third of an acre plot. The perimeter of the site was surrounded by seven very large oak and horse chestnut trees protected by a Preservation Order, three of which unfortunately had to be removed because of their poor condition.

The scheme won at appeal, has created sixteen one and two bedroom executive unique luxury apartments with sixteen parking spaces of which 6 are undercroft. The building comprises a series of linked elements and roof hierarchies to create a well articulated built form. Details including roof finials, slate roof, bracketed deep eaves, hooded circular window, stone strings and dressings and the brick plinth combine with a contempary use of glass to create a polite but fascinating reinterpretation of the local Victorian villa form. It is clear that the scheme design draws and reflects a wide variety of detailing from surrounding buildings within Biggleswade as well as the existing Brunswick House which it replaces. The massing of the scheme is devised to form a focal point at the corner of the important road junction, stepping down towards the residential boundaries in a well mannered way to respect and enhance the street scape.

A superb design and attention to detail in all respects has added a unique building to the existing diversity of buildings in the area producing a high density development maximising the site and location to the fullest with spacious and light homes to be proud of.

The Ford

The site is located within the village of Clapham with grounds running down to the River Great Ouse. The proximity of the site to the river meant that the risk of flooding was a major factor in the design of the building. We agreed with the Environment Agency , after lengthy negotiations, that the house could be elevated to allow potential flood water to run beneath it. The new house replaced a small bungalow built in the 1950’s, creating an Edwardian style riverside villa over two and a half stories incorporating 4,000 sq ft of light and spacious accommodation all taking advantage of 120ft of riverside views.

The house is designed to fit well into the local vernacular of brick built villas with stone dressing and slate tiled roofs. The built form is well modulated to provide visual interest and functional enjoyable and fascinating spaces. The house makes good use of the site to take maximum benefit from the south west facing garden with its river views. The design ensured there would be no loss of amenity by neighbours and existing vegetation to allow the building to fit comfortably within the existing context.

The whole project was an enviable success story creating a much sought after unique riveside home which sold very quickly at record prices!
